George was the son of David and Sallie A. (nee Reinert) Bechtel. He first married Angeline Meyer/Moyer with whom he had 8 known children. His second wife was Catherine Moyer, with whom he had 10 known children. He died in 1902 in Allentown and the following year his daughter Mabel was murdered. Several family members were accused but found not guilty of the murder. However, Thomas Bechtel (brother to Mabel and son of George and Catherine) committed suicide while in jail.
