ORMOND BEACH -- Opal Bacon Kaney, 80, of Pinecrest Avenue, a professor of literature and humanities at North Florida Community College, Madison, before her retirement in 1978, died Wednesday at home.

Mrs. Kaney was born in Tattnal County, Ga., and came here in 1988 from Madison. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she served on the Administrative Board and was active in numerous church organizations. She was a member of several Garden Clubs and Women's Clubs of America, and was a Daughter of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Kaney received her normal degree from the former Georgia State Teacher's College, earning a bachelor's degree at Georgia Southern University and a master's degree at the University of Georgia. She completed her doctorate in English Literature on a fellowship at the University of Florida.

Survivors include two sons, Jonathan D. Jr. and J. Lester, and a daughter, Kathryn Kaney, all of Ormond Beach; two sisters, Barbara B. Grinstead and Joan B. White, both of Tattnall County; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Haigh-Black, Ormond Beach, is in charge.
