Died of Cholera - California Gold Fields

David Barney Winchell's grand father John Ruggles Winchell and g-grandfather Benjamin Winchell were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. His father John Ruggles Winchell was an early settler in St Joseph Co. Michigan and later LaPorte IN.

David Barney Winchell and his brother-in-law Samuel Salsig are listed as passengers on the SS Columbus which left New York City, under Captain James B Peck, 12 Feb 1950.

From the San Francisco Alta California, Thursday, June 6, 1950, 10 o'clock "The Columbus left New York on the 12th of February, last, thus making the passage, including stoppages at Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, Panama and San Blas, in the space of one hundred and fourteen days. She left Panama on the evening of the 16th May."

Both David Winchell and Samuel Salsig are shown on the same page of the 1950 US Census living in the gold fields on the South Fork of the American River. David is listed as a merchant. Samuel as a miner. David died of cholera, 07 Nov 1950, 3 days after the date of the census. David's youngest son, Hirim was born in September 1850.

According to the cemetery office, due to the large numbers of daily deaths during the cholera epidemic, most cholera victims were buried in mass graves. David name is listed as being buried here and the "U" designation in the records indicates such a burial. No headstone or individual marker exists.
