John removed from Broome Co, NY to Brookville, Indiana in 1810 - probably accompanying his father Robert Ruggles. In Indiana he engaged in farming, smiting, hotel keeping, the running of a nail factory and a saw and grist mill. He served in the war of 1812. He was a captain of a light horse company. He subsequently removed to Jennings Co., Ind; laid off the town of Columbia; was elected Justice of the Peace; member of the legislature; and judge. After six years residence at Columbia, he removed to Ft. Wayne; thence to White Pigeon, Mich, where he served as Justice of the Peace and Postmaster. He had the contract for carrying the mail for the entire state. Subsequently he removed to Stillwell's Prairie, near LaPorte, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Son David David Barney Winchell Find A Grave #Find A Grave Memorial# 66939738,died of Cholera in California in 1850.
