John Carlin was born on June 2, 1929 in Butte, Montana to Patrick Carlin and Veronica (Tobin) Carlin.

He wrote of his life: "When I was about one year old, we moved back to Butte [from Park City] after the mines opened up. When I was 2 1/2, my mother, Veronica, passed away and, at that time, they would not allow the father to raise the children. We were sent to St. Joseph's Catholic orphanage in Helena. There were myself, my sister Veronica - age 8 1/2, my brother Huey - age 6 1/2, and my brother Pat - age 13 1/2.

Pat was in the home for about six months and he went to live with... my mother's older sister...until he married Eunice when he was 17 and she was 16.

I was in the "babies" until 5 years old and Veronica, Huey, and myself were not allowed to visit each other or talk to girls until Aunt Alice complained ....

I also had another sister, Barbara, who died from Meningitis before I was born.

When I left the home at age 14, I went to live with Aunt Fran and Bud Graham for about a year and then went to live with Pat and Eunice. They had three girls at that time and then had two boys. I lived with them until I married Maxine at age 30.

In 1944, I went to work at the Pay-N-Save Market for Skinny Reardon as a box boy at $.25 per hour. I worked there until 1947 and for two summers worked for the BAP Section crew between here and Rocker laying new ties.

I graduated from Butte High School in 1948 and went to work for the water company as office Clerk for about 3 years. After that I worked at the Garrett Freight lines as a truck driver for about a year.

In 1952, I went oiling on the hoists for the Anaconda Company for the next few years, moved up to second class engineer and then first class engineer by taking a state exam. I worked at the Emma Kelly #3 Hoist and then transferred to the Pit and broke in as a Cat Skinner and dozer operator. Worked at the Mountain Con 5100 and 400 foot level. Worked at the Stewart and St. Lawrence Mines and at the Badger Mine running the Main Hoist, Chippy Hoist and 4900 Hoist.
I got involved with the Operating Engineers Union about 1959 (at that time it was Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers) and became President of the Union about 1968, Local 375, International Union until the mines closed in 1982. I was also first trustee and auditor and Vice President before becoming President.

After the mines closed, I worked two summers as equipment operator for Silver Bow County on street repairs, then went to work at Boulder Developmental Center in 1985 on maintenance and as Stationary Engineer on the boiler. Worked there for 5 years and retired in 1990.

I married Maxine Nardoni 10-24-59 and she passed away 10-12-1994. I then married Lois Wilson on 11-3-1995.

My father was Patrick J. (Black Patty) Carlin who was born in County Mayo, Ireland about 1898. He mined for a time, but was an alcoholic and passed away about 1949 at the old County Hospital. We had very little contact with him over the years. ...The home would not allow him to visit us."
