Son of Alexander McCormack and Rachel Williams and was born in 1827 in Jackson County, AL. He married Francis Ann Biddle on March 17,1857. It is believed that William and Francis McCormack did not have children.

Military Service:

1st Tennessee & Alabama Independent Vidette Cavalry {Union} Companies A, B, C, G and H were organized at Stevenson and Bridgeport, Alabama, between September 10, 1863 and April 26, 1864. Companies D, E and F, were organized at Tracy City and Nashville, Tennessee between December 9, 1863 and February 24, 1864. This cavalry participated in the skirmish at Hunt's Mills near Larkinsville, Jackson County, Alabama; they were a part of an expedition to Lebanon, Tennessee between December 12 and 29 and were in another skirmish at Sand Mountain, Alabama on December 26. They were mustered out on June 16, 1864. It is believed that William died during or shortly after the war. Cause unknown.

In the ORWR Union officers report it is stated that the TN & AL Union men were not effective at combat on their home grounds because they faced so many of their neighbors and relatives in arms against them. Sand Mountain was much like East Tennessee in it's division of loyalties.
