Following a miscarriage while in China, her health began to deteriorate (her obituary would indicate she contracted TB). The couple traveled to Norway to get medical assistance. There one of Nicoline's nurses was a young woman named Emma Hasle. Nicoline and Emma became good friends.
Finally, when it became apparent that Nicoline was not recovering, they left Norway and returned to Montevideo, Minnesota where she died. It was her dying wish that Ingvald find a wife to help him in China and she suggested he contact Emma, her Norwegian nurse-friend. Ingvald returned to China and sent for Emma. She met him there and they were married 30 Oct 1907.
