Willa Venetta (Neta) Bond Kelsey, 99, passed away Nov. 2, 2010 at the Beehive Home in east Orem.

She was born May 8, 1911, to Hyrum Jesse and Lovina Bushnell Bond in the former town of Clear Lake, which was located on the railway line south of Delta in Millard County, Utah.

She attended school in Clear Lake for most of her younger years up to the 8th Grade. She then lived with relatives in Meadow and attended the 9th Grade at Millard High School in Fillmore. While growing up, she worked in her parents business establishment, the Clear Lake Store & Hotel, which also housed the post office. That's where she met, and later married Roland Kelsey on Nov. 14, 1929; right at the beginning of the Great Depression.

Life wasn't easy in those days, and finding a job to feed a family was not easy. Roland finally found work in a mine in Pioche, Nevada, and that's where Venetta's first daughter Beryl was born. Soon after that, they returned to the Delta area and lived in an abandoned house where a second daughter Janet was born, before moving to Roosevelt--again living in an abandoned house. During 3 years in Roosevelt, Venetta had daughter number 3, Mary Jane. From the Uinta Basin, it was back to Venetta's family who was living in Meadow at the time. That's where her first son, David was born.

After a short stay in Meadow it was back to the Uinta Basin living on a farm east of Duchesne where the family lived in a log cabin which had been used as a chicken coop at one time; but Mom always told us kids--it was warm! Roland, along with his father and brother, tried to make a living at dairy farming, but that soon failed, so it was back to Meadow again living near Mom's relatives. Venetta stayed there with 4 kids, while Roland was off looking for any work he could find. He eventually found a job in Southern California, and in 1941, the family moved to Bell Gardens.

But everyone soon got homesick, so just before moving back to Utah in 1943, Venetta's 5th child, Michael was born. Back in Utah and the Uinta Basin, the family lived in Randlett briefly, in or near Roosevelt, and on a farm near Myton. Venetta's 6th child, Gail was born in Roosevelt; then in the summer of 1954, the family moved to Provo. Within one year, Venetta found a job at the Utah State Hospital where she worked for nearly 20 years before retirement.

In 1967, Venetta and Roland moved to Springville, where Roland died in 1975. A few years later Venetta wrote a book, "Life on the Black Rock Desert: A History of Clear Lake, Utah." Soon after that, she moved back to the Provo house in the old Provo 8th Ward. Later, and with great reluctance, she moved to the first of 2 care centers in Orem in March, 2006.

Venetta is survived by 6 children: Beryl Furner (Boyd) of Provo; Janet Call (Dan) of Ogden; Mary Springer (Chuck) of Roosevelt; David Kelsey (Grace) of Midvale; Michael R. Kelsey of Provo; and Gail W. (Bill) Kelsey (Miralee) of Saratoga Springs. She has 16 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren, and 55 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11a.m., Sat., Nov. 6, at the old Provo 8th Ward chapel (Provo Peak 7th Ward) at 502 E. 200 North in Provo.

Viewing will be at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center, Provo, from 6-8 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 5; and from 9:30-10:45 a.m. just prior to the funeral at the old 8th Ward chapel. Burial will be in Roosevelt City Cemetery next to Roland.
