Beryl Ellen Kelsey Johnstun Furner
1931 - 2017

Early Life: Beryl was born January 9, 1931, in Pioche, Lincoln County, Nevada, to Roland and Willa Venetta Bond Kelsey, the oldest of their seven children. Beryl was raised in Utah and California. She attended 1st through 4th grades in Duchesne, Roosevelt, and Meadow in Utah and 5th and 6th grades at Bell Gardens in California, then back to Utah for 7th through 12th. Beryl graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949. Beryl loved recess and physical education class. She was athletic and played basketball, volleyball, softball and the standing broad jump. She won 1st place in the distance throw at the final track meet one year in high school. The family lived on several farms as her father was a share cropper. Beryl, being the oldest, would help her father with the chores. One time, when she was a teenager, her father had other responsibilities, so she drove the tractor and plowed a 40 acre field. She didn’t know how, but she just did it.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Following graduation, Beryl joined the local Civil Air Patrol (C.A.P.) for a year and flew in an airplane a few times. She thought it was great fun. She worked at Jacob’s Lake as a nanny and housekeeper and returned to Roosevelt to work at Bradshaw Auto Parts, where she met Karl. She married Alma Karl Johnstun, on November 7, 1951, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. JoLynn was born from this union. After only three short years, Karl became ill and passed away on December 28, 1954. She moved to Provo the next year to attended Brigham Young University. She trained as a nurse’s aide and became a phlebotomist and lab tech at LDS Hospital. She loved working in the Newborn Nursery at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. She also worked nights at the old BYU Student Health Center for more than six years. She met Boyd William Furner in the fall 1963. Boyd’s wife, Minnie DeJong, had passed away on December 26, 1961. Beryl and Boyd were married April 12, 1964, in Spanish Fork, Utah. David was born on Easter Sunday the next year. They were married for 48 years before Boyd passed away October 2, 2012. Beryl enjoyed studying and learning about nutrition and how to take care of her health. She loved being with her family for all kinds of activities. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in Primary, Relief Society and other callings. She also served as a service missionary with Boyd at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake as well as the Provo Tabernacle, now the Provo City Center LDS Temple.
