James Wilbert Barnwell, age 64, died Friday evening at East Georgia Regional Medical Center after a sudden heart attack. He was a native of Bulloch County and lived here most of his life. He was a member of the Class of 1956, the first graduating class of Southeast Bulloch High School. Mr. Barnwell was a veteran of the United States Navy retiring after twenty years of service to his country. He also retired after twenty-two years with Georgia Southern University where he was employed as a heating and air conditioning mechanic. He was an avid gardener and fisherman and a member of the Eastern Heights Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Nora Bernice Thompson Barnwell.

Survivors include his wife, Shelby Jean Hagin Barnwell of Statesboro; three daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda and Danny Buchanan of Jacksonville, Fla., Nora and Jeff Willoughby of Statesboro and Patsy and Steve Smith of Nevils; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Leann Barnwell of brooklet, Mike and Theresa Howell of Statesboro and Robbie Howell of Portal; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Junior Mincey of Brooklet and Jeanette and Bill Perkins of Statesboro; one brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Nancy Barnwell of Prattville, Ala.; sixteen grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Jake A. Futch Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
