Bennie Lee Barnwell, 78, died Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center after a long illness. Mr. Barnwell was a native of Banks County but had lived in Bulloch County most of his life. He was a farmer and was a member of the Statesboro Bible Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nora Bernice Thompson Barnwell, Brooklet; two daughters, Mrs. Kathleen Mincey, Brooklet, and Mrs. Jeanette Perkins, Statesboro; two sons, Paul Barnwell, Prattville, Ala., and Wilbert Barnwell, Statesboro; five sisters, Mrs. Estell Chitwood, Fitzgerald, Mrs. Willie Bell Ash, Orange Park, Fla., Mrs. Sally Dyches, Savannah, Mrs. Frellie Ellington, Twin City, and Mrs. Adele Dyches, Lexington, S.C.; four brothers, Roy J. Barnwell, Twin City, Charlie Barnwell, Savannah, Carney Barnwell, Metter and J.C. Barnwell, Monticello, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the chapel of Hodges-Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Max Alderman officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gus Groover. Burial will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Hodges-Turner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
