A Sketch Of The Life And Death Of Mrs. Martha R. Bolyard. Shawnee Daily News. Shawnee. OK. Sun., May 17, 1914.
Excerpt -- Martha R. Messenger was born April 11, 1837 in Terra Alta, W.Va. She converted and joined the Baptist church when about sixteen years of age and through her long life lived a loyal Christian. She was not very well known in church circles in Shawnee for two reasons, first, she was unsettled when she came, thought she would likely return to her old home. Second, she was very hard of hearing, and for some reason could not hear the sermon. For the last reason she did not go to church and for one or both reasons she did not bring her church membership here, but left it in her old home church in Terra Alta.
She was married to Mr. Christian C. Bolyard in 1863. To this union eleven children were born, six boys and five girls. Of these four of the boys and one of the girls are dead. The husband and father died October 31, 1894 at the age of forty-eight, thus leaving her with all of the responsibility and care of the children. God permitted her to live to see all of her children Christians and in their own homes. She loved her children and was loved by them. She moved to Shawnee in 1902 and made her home for some years before her death with her daughter, Mrs. Bert Russell, who lives at 315 North Market.
Her two sons, Charles P. and John C., are substantial business men of Lindsay, Okla. It gives me pleasure to state that they are active Christian business men. They and the daughter with whom she lived, Mrs. Russell, were the only children that were present at the funeral. The other daughters, are Mrs. Dora Hoover and Mrs. Florence Bowers of West Virginia and Mrs. Mary Myers of Cumberland, Maryland.
She had been in right health for one of her age until about one week before the end came when she had a stroke of Paralysis, after which she was in serious condition until detained by death May 14 at 1:40 a.m., at the ripe old age of seventy-seven years, one month and four days. She had every attention that could have been given to her by loved ones and friends during her illness. After the end came, her body was carefully prepared and placed in a beautiful casket, and she looked like she had just fallen asleep. The funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church in the afternoon of May 15. The service was conducted by Rev. E. L. Compere. After the service the body was taken to the city of the dead, Fairview Cemetery, where it was lowered into its final resting place.
