In the notes of the town historian of Greene, New York it was noted that Platt became "a composer and violinst of note in New York City." He was one of the original members of Willard's Saxhorn Band in Greene, New York. It was formed in 1855. Platt started as drummer boy of the band and worked his way up to be the leading solo coronetist.

The band was "an institution in Greene for quite a number of years."

Platt spent his summers in Greene, New York after he left for New York City.
