Roy Karr, 80, highly regarded farmer northeast of Traer many years whose wife preceded him in death about 10 years ago, died last Friday afternoon, November 12, in the Mari-Ellen Nursing Home in Dysart where he had been a patient the last eight years. His funeral services were held in the Traer United Methodist church Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Myron Brockmeyer, pastor. Mrs. Brockmeyer provided the music at the organ and was accompanist for Mrs. Burdell Staker, soloist Pallbearers, all grandsons, were Dennis, Don, Kim , Paul and Robert Karr and Larry Nation. In charge of the flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Cherveny and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wieck. Interment was in Buckingham cemetery. Erickson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Karr was born December 26, 1890, in Johnson county, Iowa. He was married to the former Bertha Fay Coleman at Marion, August 4, 1909, when both were living in Cedar Rapids. They made their home in the Traer community after their marriage. Roy worked as a farmer for others for a time, but soon the couple began farming on their own in the Traer-Geneseo community and continued there many years. They bought a farm of 160 acres which they operated several years. In 1951 after the sale of their farm Roy bought a motel at Springfield, Missouri, and Mr. and Mrs. Karr moved to that city to take charge of the business, selling it after several years on account of impaired health. After his retirement in Traer, Roy worked for a time as janitor of the Traer Methodist church and assisted the custodian at the school building.
The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary in August, 1959. About 120 relatives and friends attended an open house reception in the Dysart Community building, arranged by their daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Nadine) Kanis and Mrs. Roger (Lenore) Nation, and their five sons and daughters-in-law. The sons were Darrell of Traer; Raymond of Vinton: Cleone of Waterloo, Dale of Cedar Rapids; and Meryl of Dysart, and at the time of their 50th anniversary they had 28 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren A few more of the latter have been added since. Their daughter, Mrs. Nadine Kanis, died in October, 1969. One grandson, a son of Cleone, died in an accident. Mr. Karr has one great-greatgrandchild. The son, Darrell, established the Karr Feed & Fertilizer business in Traer in 1958. It was moved to larger quarters, and liquid fertilizer equipment added in 1963. Darrell died suddenly in January, 1964, but the Karr business is still owned by his widow, Mrs. Maxine Karr, and the services are managed by Leland Hulme. Roy's 80th birthday was a happy one when a large family reunion was held at the home of Darrell's wife, Maxine, in Traer, with all of the living children and their families present
