David W. Griego, 58, of Cheyenne died Oct. 14 at the Davis Hospice Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 16, 1952, in Cheyenne and had lived here all of his life.

Dave graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1970 and from Laramie County Community College in 1975 with an associate's degree in vocational science. He attended the University of Wyoming, majoring in health sciences.

He worked in the summers as a gandy dancer for the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads. He swung a spike mall hammer all day laying track across Wyoming, often living in a bunk car on a side track. He later graduated with his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Southern Illinois University in 1984 and master's degree in public administration for the University of Wyoming in 1993.

In 1977, Dave joined the Wyoming Air National Guard. After returning from basic training, he married his high school sweetheart, Jeri Williams, on Nov. 18, 1978.

Dave served in the WY ANG during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He received a citation for "Extraordinary Dedication to the Mission" from deployed area command. In 1994, Dave was selected as the Air National Guard Outstanding Medical Service Corp. Officer for his innovative approach to unit training. The model he developed was adopted by other guard units throughout the nation. Dave retired from WY ANG in Dec. 1999 at the rank of Captain.

Dave began his career with the Wyoming Department of Transportation in 1978. Starting as a draftsman, he was one of the first technicians to utilize computer-aided drafting to design roads. As a utilities officer, he was recognized nationally for a video he conceived and scripted featuring the first use of Subsurface Utility Excavation in Wyoming on the 16th Street Project in Cheyenne. He retired from WYDOT in 2008.

Dave was a Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 54, lifetime member of the Wyoming National Guard Association and NGAUS (National Guard Association of the United States), Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honorary Society, Sojourners, Heroes of 1776, Medical Service Corp. Officer's Association, American Legion and charter member of Wyoming Society of Public Administrators. He was also a member of the WY NG Family Program "Dream Team."

Particular about everything he did, Dave was a talented woodworker, remodeler, fly tier, rifleman and storyteller. His sense of humor and generosity will be missed by all who knew him.

Dave is survived by his wife, Jeri Griego; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcelino and Amalia Griego; seven siblings, Antonio, Joseph, Alex, George, Roger, Leroy and Mary Griego.
