Rufus recieved a common school education. He helped his brother Robert move to Iowa with six yoke of oxen. Later he helped his brother Silas move to Iowa with horses and wagons, bought land in Iowa, the deed to which was signed by James Buchanen, President of the US. afetr residing in Iowa for two years, he returned to Wayne Co, Indiana and lived for ten years on the farm later owned by William David Jordan, then lived on the S.M. Jordan farm for three years. Rufus then purchased the old homestead containing 314 acres of well improved land. this was the land origionally bought by James L. Lumpkin in 1832. He resided there for the remaining years of his life.
