Daniel Pettersson Dahlberg was born to Lask Petter Persson, of Norrbo, Dalarnas Parish, and Sophia Andersdotter, of Wessingsö, Sweden. He was the second of six children born to Lask and Sophia. Daniel was a stonecutter of cemetery monuments. After a common practice, Daniel added the surname "Dahlberg" (Dalberg) prior to immigrating to the United States in 1892. He settled in Uxbridge, MA, where he met and married Johanna Ulrika Nilsdotter (aka Nilson). They had four children: Esther Eugenia, Hannah Josephina Henrietta, Hjalmar Olivar, and Edith, b. 9/14/1899. In 1900, Daniel took ailing Johanna with his children back to Sweden, arriving in July. Edith (age 10 months) and Johanna died shortly after their arrival, apparently from tuberculosis, and were buried in Sävar Parish. Daniel and the surviving children remained in Sweden, settling in Grangärde Parish in 1901. In 1904 he married Sarah Lindberg by whom he had three more children: John Holmfrid, Astrid Elisabet, and Elin. The children from his first marriage returned to the United States, Ester, at the age of 15, in 1909, Hannah, age 16, with Hjalmar, age 15, in 1913. Elin died at the age of 8 (1922), and Daniel and his young family immigrated to the United States two months later.
