Newton County News, April 2, 1948
Rev. Albert Wilson of Nail, who is 98 years old, is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, citizen in Newton county.
But you'd never know it to see him! He is tall and erect and his speech is clear cut.
The Wilsons came to Newton county from South Carolina 56 years ago. They came to Clarksville on the train, and brought their family and household goods from there in wagons. They settled on the farm where they live to this day.
Times were hard in those early days and money was hard to come by. Twenty five cents a day was considered good wages.
Wild animals were abundant. Mrs. Wilson tells about going to the spring one day and finding a creature there which she is "mortally certain" was a bear. She didn't want us to say positively that it was a bear for fear she might have been mistaken.
But she was sure enough of it to run all the way back to the house.
At another time she heard screaming and thought that a neighbor who had been ill had died and that the family was mourning. When she went to the neighbors house she found the neighbor much improved and discovered that the screaming had been that of a panther.
Money was so hard to get at one time that Bro. Wilson, who is a Baptist minister and has preached all over Newton county, remembers how one woman at Swain could not get hold of two cents to mail a letter to her family. Finally, in desperation she offered the post master a quilt top she had made in exchange for a stamp. To the post master's credit, he gave the woman the stamp without taking her quilt top.
Bro. Wilson was J.P. at Nail for many years. Mrs. Wilson is noted for her beautiful flowers and pretty yard. They are the parents of 13 children.
