Robert was one of 7 brothers and 3 sisters. When the Civil War broke out, he and 2 of his brothers-James and Joseph-all joined the 1st Northeast Missouri Calvary Regiment, Company D. He was injured in Louisiana and his mother and younger brother went there to bring him home in a wagon. He shrapnel in his hip and it bothered him the rest of this life.
