TROUTDALE, Ore. -- Elaine Carol Shephard, a former Elk River resident, died of cancer Tuesday at her home here. She was 63.
She was born Jan. 29, 1935, to Bernard and Mabel Swenson Byers in the home of relatives in Moscow, as there was no doctor in Elk River.
She attended schools for the deaf in Gooding, Idaho, Vancouver, Wash., and Salem, Ore.
She married Ervin Shephard in 1956 in Portland, Ore., at the Lutheran Church for the Deaf, where they were members.
He drowned in 1964 while trying to rescue their nephew from the ocean near Tillamook, Ore., and she was presented with a bronze medal from the Carnegie Foundation honoring her husband.
She worked at Oeco in Milwaukee, Ore., for 25 years until retiring in 1996.
She had pride in her home and surrounded herself with flowers wherever she lived.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna Joy and Sandra Gabriel, both of Troutdale; a brother, Dick Byers of Spokane; two sisters, Lois Snider of Yakima and Bernice Knight of Richland; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Moscow City Cemetery with the Rev. Gordon Braun, chaplain at Good Samaritan Village, officiating.
Her wish was to be buried beside her mother, who died when she was 3.
Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow is handling local arrangements.
