Elizabeth, consort of John Bowers, was born in York county, Pa., February 15th, 1806, and departed this life in Hancock county, Ohio, April 12th, 1878, aged 72 years 2 months and 27 days. She was reared by religious parents, and was taught the Holy Scriptures from a child. In 1820 she was led to seek an interest in Jesus as her personal Saviour, and united with the German Reformed Church. In 1823 with her parents she moved to Wayne county, Ohio. She was married on the 11th, of January, 1825 and in 1834 moved with her husband to Hancock county, Ohio, where she lived until her death. Through the preaching of the gospel, about 35 years ago she was led to a new consecration of herself to the service of God, when an inventory of herself, husband and children, and all her possessions were turned over to God, who in accepting her offering made her to rejoice in a full hope of Eternal life. Soon her husband and children were converted to God, most of whom remain faithful in his service. Her house was a place for preaching and a home for the minister of Jesus ever after when needed. Through all her years of pioneer life she endured the privations and its disadvantages with Christian patience and earnestness, which won for her the confidence and esteem of those about her. On the 11th of January, 1875, a very pleasant family reunion was enjoyed by the family on the occasion of the golden wedding of herself and husband, which was made most interesting by her spirit and efforts. She lived to see her children grown, and pleasantly situated in life, all of whom survived her save one son (John 1841-1863), who fell in the battle of Chickamauga while defending his country. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, nine children, and thirty-seven grandchildren. Her last illness was that of great bodily suffering, - she died in great peace.
