ANTON ANGELSBERG, M. D.
It is known to all the world that Berlin and Vienna are the greatest medical centers of the world, and we have long looked to the German physicians for the solutions of our knottiest problems in materia medica, and, useless to add, we have seldom been disappointed. We cannot say why this is true; whether the German mind is better adapted by nature for the peculiar investigation necessary to bring results in this field, or whether as a nation they have encouraged medical research to a greater extent than has the rest of the world; so when we find a genuine German physician we are apt to repose every confidence in his ability and sincerity.

Dr. Anton Angelsberg, of Marshalltown, is one of the class referred to, and the eminent record he has made in his chosen profession certainly entitles him to a high rank among the best medical men of the Hawkeye state. He was born in Luxemburg, Germany, November 2, 1854. He is the son of Stephen and Mary (Ansy) Angelsberg, both natives of Germany, where they grew to maturity. were educated and were married. In 1861 the family emigrated to America; they located on a farm in Wisconsin, later moving to Iowa, and located on a farm in Winneshiek county, later moved to Warren county, where the death of the father occurred. He was a very successful farmer and became well established, living a quiet, retired life. His wife also died in Warren county. They were the parents of three sons and two daughters, two sons and one-daughter living.

Doctor Angelsberg was seven years old when he was brought to the United States. He received his primary education in the common schools, and when fifteen years-old returned to Germany with an uncle, where be entered school and prosecuted his studies in a very assiduous manner until he was twenty-one years of age. To avoid serving three years in the German army, as is the custom for all able-bodied young men, he returned to America and has since remained here. He began the study of medicine early in life and he first began to practice at St. Mary's. Warren county, Iowa, where he remained three and one-half years, enjoying a very satisfactory patronage. Then he moved to Shelby county, where he practiced with equal success for four years. Seeking a broader field for the exercise of his talents, he came to Marshalltown in 1888 and has practiced here continuously ever since, having built up a wide and lucrative general practice. He has kept abreast of the times in all matters pertaining to the science of medicine, having been a student and a close observer all his life. He is now one of the oldest practitioners in Marshall county and is one of the best known of the Profession.

Politically, he is a Republican, and he belongs to the Woodmen of the World and the Fraternal Bankers Reserve Society.

On February 2, 1882, the Doctor was married to Elizabeth K. Schultz, who was born in Germany, of an excellent family. To this union five children have been born: Joseph A., of Marshalltown, who married Myrtle Bates, of Union, Hardin county. Iowa; Mary is the wife of Benjamin Karr; Anna Philomena is deceased; Patrick A. married Harriet Iona Grayson; Anthony A. is in the United States army.
