He was born in Como, ten miles southeast of Sulphur Springs, and for many years operated a grocery store there. He later was a merchant in Sulphur Springs and in 1929 he moved to Cumby. At the time of his death, he operated a grocery store there.
Surviving are his wife; a son, the Rev. Bill Morgan Smith, pastor of the First Methodist Church at Clarksville and former pastor at the Owenwood Methodist Church in Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. W. S. Thurman, Mesquite; four brothers, B. N. Smith of Alexandria, La., C. E. Smith of Como, Oscar Smith of Greenville, and Walter L. Smith of Lubbock; two sisters, Mrs. Lula Johnson of Como, and Mrs. Josie Milton of Greenville, and three grandchildren.
