CECIL STEPHENS

Cecil Olga Stephens, the daughter of Samuel and Caroline Morlan Stephens, was born May 8, 1894, near Confidence, Iowa, and entered into eternal rest on July 31, 1974, at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon.

She was converted and baptized at the age of 18 and joined the New Providence Baptist Church at Confidence. Later, she transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church of Chariton, where she attended regularly.

At one time she served as Church Treasurer and was instrumental in organizing the Mary-Martha Mission Circle, which still meets monthly. A memorial has been established in her memory to the Building Fund of the First Baptist Church.

School teaching was her life's work, serving as both a classroom teacher and county superintendent. On three different occasions she was brought out of retirement to serve when needed in the school system, thus teaching some families for two generations.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, serving as their president since November 11, 1966. During this time she missed only two of the monthly meetings which was due to her recent illness and hospitalization. She was also a long time member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, serving as its first president.

Surviving are three sisters: Mrs. C. F. (Ximena) Robison of Corydon, Coral Stephens of Chariton, and Madgel Dewey of Cedar Falls; and two brothers, Loren Stephens of Morris, Minn., and Lawrence Stephens of Omaha, Nebr.; 12 nieces and nephews; a number of cousins, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, August 2, at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Edward Quick conducting. Burial was in the Russell Cemetery.
