Pioneer of 1847 Known For Activity I L. D. S. Church Organizations
Patriarch Elijah Norman Freeman, 90, pioneer of 1847, died Saturday in a hospital in Salt Lake City, following a short illness.
Mr. freeman was born in Laharp, Ill. May 20, 1845, a son of Elijah Norman and Mary Bingham Freeman. He came to Utah with his parents in September, 1847, with the second company of L. D. S., pioneers. His parents were amon the first members of the church in New York. While on lthe way to Utah his father hoined the United States army, in the Mormon battalion, and died in New Mexico. His mother later was married to Lorin Farr. While living in Ogden, Mr. Freeman was counselor in the presidency of Weber Stake.
Mr. Freeman later moved to Salt Lake City and was married to Mary Farley in the Salt Lake temple. He next moved to Basalt, Idaho, where he lived for many years.
LENGTHY SERVICE
He fulfilled two missions for the church. while living in Arizona he was first counselor to a bishop for twenty-one years and was a stake president in Arizona for ten years. Eight years ago he returned to Salt Lake City and had been active in temple work since. He was also a high priest in the Poplar Grove ward, Salt Lake City.
Two years ago Mr. Freeman took a ride in an airplane at a Twenty-fourth of July celebration in Salt Lake City and was at that time the oldest person in the state to have ridden in a plane. he has spent most of his life as a rancher and church worker.
Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife, Mary Farley Freeman, Salt Lake City, and the following sons and daughters; E. Norman Freeman and Mrs. Louise Freeman, of Ogden; Oscar R., Lorin R., and Erastus P. Freeman of Basalt, Idaho; 30 grandchildren. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. Thirza Farr Gay, Mrs. Laura Farr Harris and Mrs. Lenora Farr Pardoe, of Ogden; Mrs. Bell Farr Sears and Mrs. Mariah Farr Taylor, of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Rachel F. Packard, and Mrs. Elnora R. Wotherspoon of Los Angeles and Mrs. Maime F. Driver, San Diego, Calif.
BURIAL HOURS
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at twelve o'clock noon in the Poplar Grove chapel in Salt Lake City, with Bishop William Leary officiating. Friends may call at the home, 1217 Indiana avenue, Monday from six until nine o'clock and also Tuesday until time of services. The body will be at the Lindquist & Sons mortuary in Ogden from three until four o'clock Tuesday.
Interment will be made int he family plot in Ogden city cemetery.
