His parents were both dead by the time he was age 6. He then lived with an older sister in Clinton Co, OH. At age 13 he moved to Indiana to live with another sister Rhoda (and John) Gibbons. At age 18 (in June 1848) he enlisted from Terre Haute, IN in the Regular Army for service in the Mexican War, but the war ended soon and he was mustered out June 29, serving only about one month, arriving home July 4, 1848.

He settled in Whiteside Co, IL in Aug, 1848, living first with his sister & bro-in-law Mary & Tobias Shiner. He purchased a farm in Whiteside Co, IL and in that county got married. Then in 1856 they moved to Buckingham Twp, Tama Co, IA and settled on Section 35. In 1880 they moved into Traer, Tama Co, IA residing there from then on.
Four of their children died of diphtheria. He sold his Illinois farm and first bought 80 acres in Buckingham Twp 1.5 mi north of their residence. As time went on he purchased additional acres finally owning 175 then sold it when they retired and moved into Traer, but in that same year (1880) he bought a farm in Wright County, IA, which he sold in 1908. He bought it at $8/acre and sold at $74/acre. He was a member of the Whig political party until the formation of the Republican Party when he became a Republican. He was a trustee of Perry Twp several years. Member of IOOF. Methodists. Of the 4 children who died of diphtheria; 2 died 31 December 1879 and the other 2 died 20 January 1863. In 1910 Aden and his widowed sister Mary Shiner were the only two of their siblings still living. This couple met when Elizabeth came from NY to IL to visit her sister. Elizabeth was a dressmaker and tailoress. The 1850 census of Whiteside County, IL indicates he was born in Ohio.
