He was the son of Toros and Mariam Sookiasian of Malatya, Turkey. His date of birth was listed as 1865 on his grave, but that is too old and other records give it as 1871 or 1874-1875, he did not know the exact date. He was married in Malatya but she died in 1895, which happens to be the same year of the Hamidian Massacres but it is not known if her death was related to that. Haroutune came to Philadelphia in 1899 to make a better life for himself. There he married Martha Parseghian on November 16, 1901 by Armenian priest Mashtots Papazian. Haroutune and Martha had 6 children. Haroutune was a leather worker and at his death of a pulmonary edema he was living at 3715 N. Gratz Avenue in Philadelphia.
