ELDON "E. B." ASHLEY, 99, of Anthon died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2001 at Rock Branch United Methodist Church in rural Correctionville. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
Eldon Burton Ashley was born Nov. 12, 1902, at Anthon, the son of Bert Baker and Austa Jane (Drake) Ashley. In the 1920s and 1930s, he was a migrant worker. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy Seabees, serving in World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. He returned home to farm with his father and later started farming on his own. On Jan. 14, 1948, he married Nellie Katherine Petersen in Le Mars, Iowa. To this union nine children were born, one of them stillborn. Nellie passed away June 29, 1969. He married Eleen Dyer on Aug. 25, 1976 in Canton, S. D. He was a member of American Legion McNiff Post 389 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Eleen; two sons and their wives, George and Marilyn Ashley of Cushing, Iowa, and Blaine and Jane Ashley of Moville, Iowa; six daughters, Marian Ashley of Jackson, Neb., Janice and her husband, Glen Little of Lake View, Iowa, Marcia and her husband, Jerry Sistrunk of Sac City, Iowa, Sharon and her husband, Dennis Howard of Pierson, Iowa, Eunice and her husband, Mark Ericsson of Anthon and Evelyn Putzier of Anthon; a brother, Frank Ashley of Pierson; a sister, Shirley Reinking of Pierson; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Along with his wife, Nellie, E. B. was preceded in death by his parents, a son who was stillborn, two sisters and a brother.
