The son of John Yates and Julia Lovell Yates changed his last name to Aglionby in 1854 to fulfill the terms of the will of his great great aunt Sarah. The change allowed him to inherit her land. He married Fanny Walker in 1844. They lived at Mount Pleasant Farm in Jefferson County and raised a large family there. In 1860 the 375 acre farm had twenty slaves. In 1861 and 1862 most of them left, taking wagons, horses, mules, and gear, during the Federal occupation of the area. The Civil War diary and other papers of Charles Aglionby are at the United Kingdom National Archives in Carlisle, England.
