TOWN OF GRANT BACHELOR DIES AS HOME BURNS
John Simmit, 56, bachelor living on a farm in the town of Grant, Portage county two and one half miles northeast of Kellner, was found dead near his small home which had been destroyed by fire. Discovery of the body was made at about five o'clock Saturday afternoon by Clarence Eberhardt, a neighbor who lived a short distance from the Simmit home.
HOME BURNED WEDNESDAY
The small home is believed to have burned sometime Wednesday evening and apparently Simmit got out of the house and attempted to extinguish the fire by throwing dirt onto the blaze. Eberhardt said he had seen smoke in the vicinity of the Simmit home Wednesday evening but did not pay much attention to it. A spade which Simmit had apparently been using was found near the body.
Portage county officials who investigated expressed the opinion that death was apparently due to a heart attack. The body was badly decomposed from the farm weather, indicating that the man had been dead for two or three days.
Eberhardt, working in his field Saturday, looked over towards the Simmit place and noticed that the house was burned down. He sent his children over to verify his belief and then returned with the report that the former occupant was dead. Eberhardt went to the scene and discovered the body. He called the Wood county sheriff's office which in turn notified the Portage county sheriff. Sheriff Florian Krutza and Deputy Coroner Peter Prais went to the farm home, made the investigation and ordered the body returned to the Voss Funeral home in Nekoosa.
FUNERAL SUNDAY
Burial services were conducted by the Rev. C. A. O'Neil at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Riverside cemetery, Nekoosa.
John Peter Simmit was born in Chicago, Ill., on November 16, 1887, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Simmit. He had resided in this section of the state for the greater part of his life.
Surviving relatives include his mother, Mrs. Augusta Simmit of Nekoosa and one brother, Otto Simmit, living in California. Three brothers, Louis, William and Edward preceded him in death.
