Mary Jane is the daughter of Elisah Galloway & Jane (Harper) Price. The family migrated from Fleming County, Kentucky to Rush County, Indiana where they settled for a few years. In the spring of 1840, they left Indiana by covered wagon with the Billie Cassady family. They arrived in or near Milton, Iowa one Sunday in June of 1840.

Mary Jane was most likely named after her maternal grandmother, Mary Harper and her mother, Jane (Harper) Price.

Mary Jane had 5 siblings, William H (1820-), Elizabeth (1823-), Thomas Jefferson (1836-1908),Elisha Galloway Jr. (1840-1868), and Josephine Price Creath (1845-).
