SPRINGFIELD - Earle R. Mills, 70, of Springfield died Friday, February 13, 2004 in Mercy Medical Center. Born in Springfield and a lifelong resident, he attended Springfield Trade School. Earle was the son of the late Theodore P. and Bertha (Gonyea) Mills. He was a master mechanic for the Monsanto Co. and retired in 1988 after 35 years of service. Earle served in the Massachusetts National Guard 104th Infantry from 1951 - 1959. He was called to active duty from 1956 to 1958 and was a mortar expert and sharpshooter in pistol, rifle and carbine. Earle was a member of the Local #288 IUE-CWA of Indian Orchard and served on the union negotiating, grievance, by law, and civil rights committees. He was an AFL-CIO union counselor and delegate to the Pioneer Valley Labor Council. Earle was a member of the Monsanto 25 Year Club, a 37 year member of the Indian Orchard Roswell Lee Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree Mason and member and past commander of the Italian American Veterans Sistro Lombardi Post #64 of East Longmeadow. Earle is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lois C. (LaRue) Mills, a son Kenneth M. Mills of Springfield, a daughter Karen L. Mills of Holyoke, a cherished grandson, Michael A. Mills of Springfield, and 7 nieces and nephews. Earle was predeceased by 5 brothers, Lloyd E. Mills, Kenneth Mills, Vernon Mills, Theodore P. Mills, Jr. and Ralph Mills. The funeral will be Wednesday morning from the Ratell Funeral Home 200 Main St., Indian Orchard at 9 a.m. followed by services in the Evangelical Covenant Church of Indian Orchard, 95 Berkshire St., at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Island Pond Cemetery, Ludlow.
