Jay accepted the Lord as his Savior in 1975, at the Fairview United Methodist Church on the Fries Circuit in the Wytheville District. He began sharing and strengthening his faith in Jesus through lay speaking al other churches on the circuit. He became increasingly involved with the jail ministry, through which lives were reached and enriched by blessings from the Lord.
Jay responded to God's call to ministry in 1980 and began serving the Riverside United Methodist Church in Tazewell District. Other churches served included Lead Mines Circuit and Bridle Creek Circuit in Wytheville District; West Marion Circuit and Rich Valley-Washington Chapel Charge in the Abingdon District. He was serving as pastor of Rich Valley and Washington Chapel churches when God called him home on May 21, 1992.
A funeral service was conducted on May 23, 1992, 2 p.m., at Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Virginia. The Reverend Larry Patton officiated. Songs used during the service included "God Walks the Dark Hills" by Eleanor Scott, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" by Barbara Patton, and Jay's favorite hymn, "What A Friend We Have in Jesus." Interment was at the Newman Cemetery, Galax, VA.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, May 24, 1992, at Rich Valley United Methodist Church near Abingdon, Virginia, with the Reverend Robert Layell and lay leader, Sherman Thayer, officiating. During the service Mr. Thayer commented on Jay's ability to touch lives in a special way. He stated, "I've never known any person to get into my back pocket in such a short time as Jay has done."
As we remember the life and ministry of Jay Ayers, these words will echo in our hearts and minds forever: "Remember, God loves you; Jesus loves you; and I love you."
