FOLLETT - Fred Born, 94, died Saturday, May 21, 2005.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Darrouzett with the Rev. Floyd Thiessen officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery in Follett by Johnson's Good Samaritan Funeral Service in Woodward, Okla.

Mr. Born was born March 9, 1911, to John George Born II and Marie Katherine Schukert in Russia, near Saratow. Within a few months, the family was on their way to America. Fred attended Plains School located south of Darrouzett. On Feb. 8, 1931, he married Sophia Littau and lived on a farm southwest of Follett. During the drought years they moved to Okeene, Okla., later moving back to Follett, where he farmed. In 1936, he started J.I. Case machinery business, operating it for 60 years. Fred was an exceptional welder and machinist. Customers sometime would make the mistake of asking, "Fred, can you fix this." His reply was, "It's not whether I can, but will I."

In the 1940s, Fred started a propane business along with his machinery business. He established the first piped gas system to residential houses in Follett. This business was later sold and Fred continued his machinist work and welding until his health starting failing last year. He enjoyed his work not to make money, but to help fellow man. He often said he didn't mind paying taxes because this country had been good to him. His biggest regret was not thanking his dad for bringing him to America. He felt this area was truly the land of milk and honey.

Fred was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Darrouzett and was very active in church organizations and Sunday school. He was active in civic organizations and served on the Follett City Council for many years. In 1980, he was selected by Xi Sigma Lambda Sorority for "The Man of the Year Award." In 1950, Fred and Sophia built a swimming pool and opened it to the public for 15 years before giving it to the city of Follett, which is still operated today by the city.

His health started failing this last year after a bout with pneumonia. He was admitted to Twin Oaks Nursing Center in Booker on May 20 and passed away the following day.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his brothers, Alex, George, Victor and Victor's infant twin brother; and three sisters, Pauline, Natalia and Frieda.

Survivors include a daughter, Louise Lillian Bumgardner and husband, Arthur, of Brownwood; a son, Alvin Gene Born and wife, Meshel, of Follett; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-granddaughter; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry of Twin Oaks Nursing Center; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family suggests memorials be to The Filling Station in Follett and Follett Educational Fund.
