W. W. Staley

COVE, Utah William Warren Staley, 99, died peacefully in his home Sunday, March 21, 1999.

He was born June 23, 1899, in Upton, Utah, a son of Chester Stephen and Emma Jane Mallory Staley. When he was 6 months old, the family moved to Star Valley, Wyo., where he was raised. He married Wanda Low on July 5, 1923. She died in September 1972.

In 1925, they moved to Oakland, Calif. While there, he worked as a carpenter, sheep shearer, cow clipper and also owned a corner grocery store. After 20 years, he returned to Smithfield, Utah, where he operated a dairy farm. He also helped start the first cutter races in Cache Valley. In 1948, he moved to Jackson Hole, Wyo., where the family operated a dairy, bottling milk for delivery to the stores. At age 65 he climbed to the top of the Tetons with his son Kellen. He built many homes in Jackson and also helped build the new LDS church house where he served as Sunday school superintendent and in the bishopric. He and his wife were the first custodians in the new building. Because of his wifes ill health they moved to Cove to be near their daughter BeNon.

He was also married to Bessie Marie Patterson who also preceded him in death.

Horses were the love of his life. In later years he enjoyed bowling, golfing and sewing quilt tops for his 20 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Bessie Stambaugh, Union City, Calif., BeNon and Clair Allen of Cove; and two sons, Kellen and Sharon Staley, Port Douglas, Australia, and Dennis Staley, San Diego, Calif. He was preceded in death by a son, Orta.

Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Friday in the Cove LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cove Ward and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Richmond Cemetery. Arrangements are by Allen-Hall Mortuary.
