Born Manuel Esequiel Chavez, Reverend Fr. Fray Angelico Chavez was an American Franciscan priest, historian, author, poet, and painter. "Angelico" was his pen name. As a priest he was assigned to the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Pena Blanca, New Mexico. During World War II, he attended the chaplaincy school at Harvard University. From there he was placed in the 77th Infantry Division where he was present for the beach landings at Guam and Leyte. He was appointed archivist of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe where he took on translating and cataloging its Spanish Archives. His works include, "Origins of New Mexico Families: A Genealogy of the Spanish Colonial Period." This work defined the original families of New Mexico. The Museum of New Mexico at the Palace of the Governors named the new history and photographic library in his honor following his death. A bronze statue of his likeness is displayed at the entrance.
