Bernardine Pickett Williams was a native of Liberty and was a teacher for the Hull-Daisetta Independent School District. Williams was a member of the Planning Commission of the city of Liberty, treasurer of the Liberty County Martin Luther King Celebration Committee, president of the Nightingale Helpers, chairman of the Liberty County Democratic Precinct #19, a 1958 graduate of Liberty Training High Schol, a graduate of Prairie View A&M University, an officer and member of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. of Beaumont, and an officer and member of Trinity Valley Baptist Church. Survivors include her sisters, Joyce Pickett of Grand Prairie, Mildred Hunt of Hardin, Loretta Turner of Houston, and Bessie Haskins of Liberty; brothers, Melvin Laviene and Effray Laviene, both of Houston and Doria Laviene of Oakland, California; nephew, Monroe Mitchell of Dayton; niece Trina Lamer Mitchell of Arlington; and her aunt, Lou Powell of Liberty.
