Received a disability discharge from Company E, 11th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 9 Mar 1863 at St Louis, MO.

From the "Early Settlers of Cedar County" Wm. H. Bolton
John, at the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted in Co. E. 11 th Infantry Regiment on Sept 12. 1861. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh. He was shot in the chest, but the bullet did little harm, being deflected by a picture of Cornelia Culver, whom he later married, that he carried in his vest pocket.
Later he contracted malaria and received a medical discharge from Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Mo. in May 1863. His father, Wm H. Bolton, went to get his son who was to weak to travel. After walking to Muscatine he took a steamboat to St. Louis. He was accidently sent to a smallpox ward, and being told where he was, he said, "If I take smallpox I will never live". He died less than two weeks later of smallpox at the age of 57. He is buried on the home farm.

He served with my gr-grandfather Aaron Pearce and was later to become his brother-in-law when Aaron married his sister, Agnes Bolton.
