Tipton Advertiser 21 Feb 1895 page 3
Rev. James A. Bolton was born Nov. 15th, 1830, and departed this life January 25th, 1896, aged 64 years, 2 months and 9 days. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1837. He was converted and joined the church when quite young. August 20th, 1854, in Tipton, Iowa, he was married to Mrs. Missouri Travis. The same fall he joined the North Iowa Conference of the Methodist Protestant church and has been very actively engaged in the Gospel ever since.
The deceased was elected conference president five times, three of which he traveled the conference district, filing the position with honor to himself and his church. In the death of Rev. J.A. Bolton, Cedar county has lost one of its true, tried, and able ministers. In this man's death "know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen in Israel?" This man was great in view of the fact that God called him to the work of the ministry, that he was able to state and defend to a remarkable degree the doctrines of the bible, that he devoted forty years of his life to the ministry, and because his ministry was crowned with success. In early life he gave his hand to the church and his heart to God, always striving to manifest the Christ life.
While we would magnify the life and character of our brother, we would magnify the life and character of the Christ he served much more as the first cause of all human greatness. We commend his sorrowing wife and three surviving children to the fatherly care of God, and solicit the prayers of the church in their behalf.
