Joseph was a son of Joseph Stein and Eva Stei. Both paerents were born in Germay. At 24 years old he was struck by a Wabash freight train about 2:00am on the 11th of August, 1897, after attending the St. Mary's Church picnic in Bridgeton, MO. Both legs were cut off and he died without ever regaining consciousness.
