Joseph Stein was born in Obernau (3 miles SSW of Aschaffenburg), Bavaria, Germany. Joseph was 14 yrs old and his older sister, Magdalena was 22 yrs old when they were passengers on the ship Bremen, that sailed from Bremen, Germany to New Orleans, arriving 6/1/1859. Both were from the village of Oberau in Germany and their occupations were listed as servants on the ship's manifest. Their destination was St. Louis, MO, inspired by brochures they read in Germany describing how the climate and soil was similar to what they were farming in their mother country... like corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, wheat, green beens, grapes, pumpkins, turnups, and peas. It's likely their mother, Catherine, and other family members, and relatives, were also on the same ship. Joseph settled in Bonfils, St. Louis Co. MO, which is halfway between Bridgeton and Earth City. He married on 4/28/1867 in St. Charles, MO to Eva Stei (b.4/7/1841 Hesse-Cassel, Germany). Her last name 'Stei' could possibly be Stein.

Joseph married on 4/28/1867 in St. Charles, MO to Eva Stei (b. 4/7/1840 at Akademisches Entbindungshaus, the hospital of the University of Marburg in Marburg, Hesse, Germany, d. 1/25/1917 St. Louis, MO, buried in Bridgeton, MO). She was a daughter of Ludwig Klingelhofer (1816-1861) and 2nd wife Eva Stie (1810-1877).

Joseph's wife Eva Stei traveled on board the steamer Herman "Heinrich in German" and arrived on 4/30/1866 in New York, New York, United States.
