He was the son of John Archer IV and his wife, Elizabeth Chamberlayne Batte. He attended the University of Virginia and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA, in 1848. He was nominated to be an assistant surgeon in the U.S. navy in 1850, but declined the appointment.During the Civil War, he served as a surgeon in the Confederate forces.
Archer married Maria Randolph Willson of Amelia County, VA, on 20 Oct 1868. The couple had the following children: John Anderson Archer and Harry Field Archer. Dr. Archer served on the Henrico County Board of Supervisors from the Varina District from 1870 to 1875. He died in his home in Henrico Co., VA, on Sept. 30, 1904.
