In 1857 he left Switzerland and made his way across France to the port of La Havre were he book passage aboard the SS Mercury for Amercia. He landed at New York on 2- July 1857. He was a farmer all his life. During the Civil War He enlisted on 30 August 1861 as a private in Company B of the 17th. O.V.I. regiment.Dischared on 16-July 1865 the rank 0f Sergant.On 15-December 1865 he married Anna Schaad whose mother was Barbara Knorr, a cousin on his mothers side.
Urs & Anna had the following children: Sarah Ellen B: 6-Nov.1866 Fairfield Co.Oh. D: 21 Apr:-1867, Sarah Almeda B: 19-Feb.-1868 D: 15-Mar.-1898 Married a man with the surname Hartman.,Elmira Elva B:11-Dec.-1869 D:7-Mar.-1870
