He arrived in New York City with his parents on 3 June 1857, aboard the American packet ship SS Charles Cooper. In later life in America he went by the anglicized name of John Wemle Emch. During the Civil War, he enlisted on 18 November 1861, at Woodville, Ohio as a private in Company I of the Ohio 68th Volunteer Infantry under the name of "John Emch, Jr." Regimental records show he was wounded at the battle of Raymond on 12 May 1863, but apparently his wound was not serious enough to discharge and send him home. Same records show that he was mustered out of the regiment on 10 July 1865, as a corporal. He was a stone mason by trade. The 1900 Census listed him living with the daughter of his sister, Anna (née Emch) Grube, Mary V. (née Grube) Bright alone with his bachelor brother, Benjamin (Memorial# 42095172), and spinster sister Mary (Memorial# 42095136).

Never married.
