William H. "Bill" Brown, 81, of 613 E. 1450th St., Payson, Ill., died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in his home, surrounded by his loving family and his dear caregiver and daughter-in-law Jane Brown.
Born on July 8, 1927,in Mexico, Mo., Bill was the son of Marshall A. and Estelle Butler Brown. He married Joan Wolfe on Aug. 20, 1949, in Hannibal, Mo. She survives.
Bill was a member of the Plainville United Methodist Church and had served on the church board. He was a 1945 graduate of New London, Mo., High School. Bill was a member of the Payson Masonic Lodge No. 379 and the Quincy Consistory. He and his wife Joan were honored as Parade Marshalls at the Payson Old Settlers in 2005. He enjoyed boating with his family, especially at the Lake of the Ozarks each year. He loved being with his family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and had a special bond with his granddaughter Melissa.
Bill worked his family farm near New London, Mo., which had been in his family since the 1870's. In 1955, he and his wife moved to Adams County, Ill., where he farmed, and along with his wife also owned various businesses in Payson for 17 years. In 1983, he and his sons began operating Brown's Cross Country Truck Line and later River City Parts Inc. in Quincy, Ill.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; one daughter, Audrie Bunte and her husband Jerry of Payson; four sons, Marshall Brown and his wife Cheryl of Payson, Stephen Brown of Hannibal, and Paula Brown of Hannibal, Robert Brown and his wife Jane of Quincy, and Matthew Brown and his wife Luann of Quincy; 14 grandchildren, Melissa Brown of Quincy, Jennifer Anderson and her husband Jon of Plainville, Jason Brown and his wife Stephanie of Quincy, Jered Brown of Chicago, Jonathan Brown and his wife Jill of Quincy, Joni Hazelrigg and her husband Charlie of Payson, Lucas Bunte and his wife Stephanie of Quincy, Allison Bunte of Manchester, Mo., Elizabeth Gavin and her husband Tony of Springfield, Ill., Melanie, Mallory and Connor Brown, all of Hannibal, and Landon and Lauren Brown of Quincy; and 10 great-grandchildren, Blaine and Carson Brown, Jordan and Jaden Anderson, Isabella, Elliana and Jonny Brown, Cayden and Chloe Hazelrigg and Brooks Gavin.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, James C. Brown, and an infant sister, Marjorie Brown; a brother, Thomas Brown; and a sister, Geraldine A. Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Plainville United Methodist Church in Plainville, Ill., with Pastor Tom Day and the Rev. Stacy Tomich officiating. Burial will be in Barkley Cemetery in New London, Mo.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy, and from noon until time of services Monday tat the Plainville United Methodist Church in Plainville. The Payson Masonic Lodge No. 379 will conduct Masonic Services at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials may be made to the Plainville United Methodist Church or Blessing Hospice.
