John Willis Merriwether was born in Kennard, Texas to James Creath Merriwether and his wife Georgia Brown Merriwether. He attended school in Kennard and graduated from Kennard High School in 1939. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific. He was a life-time resident of Houston County and was a successful rancher and cattleman. He married Faye Louise McCurdy on August 29, 1947 and they were the parents of two children: John Thomas Merriwether and Georganna Merriwether Bozeman. He and his wife Faye were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Crockett.
