Thirty-fourth and Thirty-eighth Consolidated,Jan. 1, 1865.
Mustered out. Aug. 15, 1865, Houston, Texas.
Service of 34th & 34/38 Iowa during his enlistment:
Duty at Matagorda Island,Louisiana until Apr 64. Construction of dam at Alexandria Apr-May 64. Capture of Ft Morgan, Alabama Aug 1864. The 34th was so decimated by disease ( Only about 400 left of 1081 enlisted) that it was consolidated with the 38th Iowa and renamed the 34th Consolidated Battalion. Moved to Pensacola, FL via New Orleans Jan-Mar 65. Siege and capture of Ft Blakely ,AL. Garrison duty at Mobile and Selma Ala till May 65. Duty at Galveston and Houston, TX until muster out. Zalmon Morton was the son of Jason Morton and Hannah Ellis. He married Cordelia Jackson on Sep. 10,1848 in Albion, Erie, Pennsylvania where she was born. His father, Jason, helped to build the Little Brown Church. His brother, Benjamin Ellis Morton married Jennie Tannahill and faught in the Civil War with his brother Alvin Morton and William Tannahill. Alvin was killed in the Battle of Belmont and William Tannahill was taken prisoner in the same battle.
