JAMES S. GARRETT

James S. Garrett was born in Mercer county, Illinois, June 15, 1858, and died at his home near Purdy, on December 17, 1926, aged 68 years, 6 months and 2 days.

When eight years old he moved with his parents from Illinois to Iowa, coming directly to the farm near which the Pleasant Prairie church is now located. Here he grew to manhood and here he lived until the day of his death.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Bingaman on October 23, 1879. To this union three children were born, Thomas N. Garrett, Mrs. Fanny Hunt and Clarence Garrett. He was a great lover of home, and all three children live within sight of the home place.

He was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal in 1879, and a few years afterward was baptized. He truly exemplified Micah's description of a holy man when Micah said, "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good and doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God."

His love for the church grew with the passing of the years, and as his bodily strength diminished, his spiritual strength was renewed, until at last he stands where we see, as we are seen, and know as we are known. In his business relations, in his personal relations with his neighbors, he was a Christian. That tells it all.

His wife, his children, his seven grandchildren, a neighborhood stands bowed in grief. A prince, a mighty man of Israel has fallen. A humble man of God has wrapped his holy mantle about himself and gone home.

Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Episcopal church at Columbia by the pastor, Rev. E. J. Zunzieg, assisted by Rev. Finch, of the Bussey M. E. church. Interment was made in the Columbia cemetery.
