GARRETT - John Clarence Garrett, son of James S. and Elizabeth Bingaman Garrett, was born June 18, 1886 on a farm near Belinda, Pleasant township, Lucas county, Iowa, and passed away February 9, 1967 at the Lucas County Memorial Hospital at the age of 80 years, seven months and 22 days, after an extended illness.
He was united in marriage to Myrtle E. Stevenson October 14, 1908 and their 58 years of married life were spent on the farm where he was born. To this union one son was born.
At an early age Clarence joined to the Pleasant Prairie Methodist Church where he remained a faithful member his entire life.
Along with his interest in the farm, he was a well-known auctioneer and co-owner of the Hillcrest Auction at Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Tom, and one sister, Fanny Hunt.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle, his son, Oran and daughter-in-law, Abbye, and four grandchildren: Jim, Carolyn Nichols, Joanne Sellers and Linda Chamberlain. Also eight great-grandchildren, all of whom reside in Chariton and the Belinda community.
His enjoyment of life, his devotion to his family, his friends and his church, his love of the beauty of nature and the handiwork of God will long be remembered.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Dennis Hemphill at 2 p.m., at Pleasant Prairie Methodist Church. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
