Thomas Henry Dabney grew to manhood on the family farm two miles southeast of Mark, Iowa. He obtained his education in the rural schools and attended Kirksville Normal and later after his conversion to religion, feeling that he should preach the gospel, he realized the need of a better education so he attended the University at Lincoln, Illinois. On August 22, 1877 he married Laura Matilda Lang. For a few years, Thomas taught in the public schools, teaching in Iowa and Nebraska. Eventually he felt he must obey the call of God, so while preaching for the Floris Baptist church he was ordained to the ministry. He preached the Gospel in the states of Missouri, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon and California.
